So Long, and Thanks For All the Fish

During the last three months I searched for a new project. I hoped to obtain a larger XPages development project. But in short, there are no projects. Even „normal“ Lotus Notes development projects does not exist anymore, or are extremly rare (and you don’t want to know their daily rates…).

It is the same procedure as every year. But it’s getting harder. Year by year.

In the last years, I always hoped that Lotus Notes is not dead. But the tribal wisdom of the Dakota Indians, passed on from generation to generation, says that, „When you discover that you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount.“. I have ignored this simple wisdom for a long time, but now it’s time to move on. To leave the game on top (as an IBM Champion) is the the best I can do now.

    Hi Sven
    It is sad to hear.
But it is a trend I hear about from several places.I also had to dismount.
I have worked with Notes/domino for more than 20 years. Until this year, 80% of my company’s income came from Notes/domino development but now it is less than 20% (and 2013 is already above average, so a fresh horse can be a good choice).
My best wishes for the future.
    Regards

For similar reasons I have been slowly cross training myself out of Domino.
What technologies are you moving towards?

  6. Sad to hear this. My Notes job is going to disappear also. Towards India 😕 So if someone has a job offering…

  7. just crossed my mind: read today that IBM invested 100 million dollar in Notes 9 (http://www.idg.se/2.1085/1.529545/efter-avhoppen–notes-ar-fortfarande-viktigt-for-ibm). If IBM is smart they place a couple of creative Notes developers together to develop the next generation of IBM Notes templates. With a new portfolio of out of the box as application platform Notes would stand much stronger…

    • Finn L. Knudsen sagt:

I agree with you that IBM should spend resources on better templates, but I do not think it will happen.
      My thoughts about $ 100million.
If you have at least 30 million users who pay at least $ 20 in annual maintenance. Then is the $ 100 million maybe not so much.
And V. 9.0 was V. 8.5.4 until shortly before release.

    Sven,

Very sorry to hear this. Thank you for all the help you provided to me with XPages. I hope you are able to keep this website up as a resource to the community.

I echo Mark in saying that whichever technology you decide to pursue, that community will be fortunate to have a bright mind like yours.

    Regards,

    Dan

  9. Same here, been working on JEE projects for over a year and it doesn’t look like I’ll be doing Domino projects any time soon.
Working on JEE projects isn’t bad, but I do miss the Lotus community!
